In order to keep up with a the needs of a growing population, technology changes, and new privacy laws, voters approved a 49.9 million dollar expansion/renovation project for Central Peninsula General Hospital.  The Kenai Peninsula Borough has awarded the contract for design services to Soderstrom Architects to plan the future needs of its 50-Bed community hospital within the existing campus.

The expansion and renovation will be completed in three phases:

Phase I: Site Prep - includes site preparation and excavation, utility infrastructure, and additional surface parking. Approximate completion: December 2004

Phase II: New Construction - will add a two-story, approximately 78,000 square foot addition. The main floor of the addition will contain an expanded surgery department, central sterile processing, waiting room, and cardiopulmonary department.  The upper floor will house patient rooms and an inpatient pharmacy.  The basement will include housekeeping, clinical lab, office space, and some shell space for future expansion.  Also included in this phase will be an expanded hospital drive, patient drop-off with canopy, and additional parking. Approximate completion: March 2006.

Phase III: Renovation - includes remodeling and expanding emergency services, imaging, dietary services, and other departments within the existing facility.  This phase will also include a new main entry and lobby, re-roof, and additional parking.  Approximate completion: June 2007.

The hospital's recent affiliation with the Planetree National Alliance will add design factors that are home-like, barrier-free, support patient dignity and encourage family participation in care.
